Race Rundown
After qualifying on Friday, Mayer landed the No.1 Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions Chevrolet in the 13th position to start Saturday’s main event. In the green flag shuffle, the Franklin, Wis. native made his way up to seventh on lap 1 prior to the first caution of the day coming out.
Under caution, Mayer reported “feeling really loose firing off” to crew chief Mardy Lindley. Lindley made the call to stay out and not pit for the early caution. As the laps rolled by, the wind started to pick up and the young driver fought being tight center off.
Kevin Hamlin (spotter) came over the radio reporting to Mayer “be smart, long way to go here” as the team finished Stage One in the 12th position.
Mayer came down pit road at the stage-ending caution for four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment as he reported to have no front grip. The No. 1 Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions rolled off pit road to start Stage Two in ninth.
Within the first lap, the 19-year-old gained two spots to move him up to the seventh position and he remained quiet on the radio after the adjustments were made. The third yellow of the day came out on lap 75 as teammate Josh Berry spun in Turn 4. Lindley made the call to stay out once again during this caution period.
Just a few short laps later, another caution came out and Mayer came across the radio letting the team know his balance was much better and his fire off was really good. The No. 1 Camaro came down pit road for four tires and fuel to get to a seventh-place position finishing Stage Two.
Mayer started the Final Stage in the seventh spot and battled with the No. 98 of Riley Herbst and the No. 18 of Sammy Smith to move up to fourth. However, with 70 laps to go the driver of the No.1 started to feel a slight vibration.
The No. 1 came down pit road under green for four tires and fuel. Mayer was quiet on the radio as Hamlin led him through the field to break the top five with 35 laps to go.
After a long hard-fought battle and a shuffle with five laps to go, Mayer brought the No.1 Chevrolet home to a seventh-place finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Sam Mayer, driver No. 1 Accelerate Talent Group Chevrolet Team
“We had a really fast Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions Chevrolet today. The wind was heavy on us as we fought loose conditions early on and then tight a little bit later. The adjustments the No. 1 guys were making were really good and we were able to balance out pretty well compared to the start. Happy to get a top- 10 finish out of today and ready to roll to Phoenix and continue the good momentum there.”
